Stepping Into the Unknown:

My Experience at a Wedding Pro Networking Event

I like to think of myself as an extrovert. Ever since I was a kid, I would talk to anyone and everyone who would listen. I mean, I could talk to a wall and have the best conversation! So when I decided to rebrand my photography business, I knew networking had to be a huge priority. They say, "It's not what you know, it’s who you know," and while talent and expertise matter, the right connections can open doors faster than you ever imagined. Honestly, there’s some real truth to that.

Earlier this year, I rejoined The Knot and WeddingWire community, hoping to drive my business forward. When I saw they were hosting a wedding pro networking event in Winter Park, I told myself, This is exactly what I need to do!

Fast forward to the night of the event—my stomach was in knots. Walking into a venue alone, not knowing a single person, suddenly felt so intimidating. I wasn’t sure what I expected, but as soon as I stepped in, I felt a wave of nerves hit me. The room was buzzing—people chatting, laughing, hugging like they were old friends. And then there was me… scanning the room, trying to figure out where to start.

For a moment, doubt crept in—Am I supposed to be here? Will I make a good impression? What if I just stand awkwardly in the corner? I wish I had been more assertive right off the bat, but instead, I hesitated. I waited for the "right moment" to jump into conversations instead of just going for it. Eventually, I pushed past my nerves and started talking to vendors, but looking back, I know I could have made even more of the opportunity by being a little bolder.

That said, I still had some amazing conversations with incredibly talented vendors—venue coordinators, hair and makeup artists, and wedding planners, all of whom were so passionate about what they do. Hearing their stories, learning about their services, and just soaking in their energy was inspiring. I walked away with a new appreciation for how every detail comes together to create a couple’s dream wedding.

One of the standout features of the event was the incredible atmosphere created by the details. The floral arrangements were absolutely stunning, filling the space with vibrant colors and fresh scents that added so much life to the venue. The DJ and entertainment set the perfect tone, keeping things lively and engaging. Not to mention, the hors d'oeuvres were delicious and definitely kept the conversation flowing (who doesn’t love a good snack while networking?). The photo booth was a fun touch, giving everyone a chance to capture some lighthearted moments, and the cotton candy? A sweet surprise that added an extra layer of joy to the evening. It’s these thoughtful touches that make an event feel like more than just a networking opportunity—they help create lasting memories too.

Another highlight was the Strategist Bar, where reps from The Knot and WeddingWire offered 1-on-1 coaching. They walked vendors through their storefronts, giving personalized advice on how to improve their profiles and really showcase their businesses. Having that kind of hands-on guidance was such a valuable bonus—networking is great, but having resources to strengthen your business in real time? Even better!

So, what did I take away from this experience? And what can you do if you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed at a networking event?

  1. Give Yourself Grace – It’s okay to feel nervous. The best growth happens when you push yourself outside your comfort zone.

  2. Be Bold in Introducing Yourself – Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Just go for it! You belong in that room just as much as anyone else.

  3. Set a Small Goal – Instead of feeling like you have to meet everyone, aim to have a few meaningful conversations.

  4. Ask Questions – People love talking about their passion. Showing genuine interest makes conversations flow naturally.

  5. Follow Up – The real magic happens after the event! Send a quick message or email to keep the conversation going.

Walking out of the event, I felt accomplished but also reflective. I know I want to challenge myself to be even more proactive in future networking situations—less hesitation, more confidence. Because at the end of the day, it’s all about connection.

If you’ve ever hesitated to attend an event like this, take the chance. And remind yourself—if you're feeling this way, chances are, others are too. You never know what incredible opportunities could be waiting for you on the other side of a simple "hello."
